more about us ...bee bright is run by husband and wife team, Richard and Varsha Rickitt - with a little help from their three young children; Charlie, Ruby and Lily.
After spending four years running the education department of the London Film Festival, Richard established a London-based animation company which over ten years created graphics and special effects for television programmes such as Tweenies, Grand Designs, Eastenders and Panorama. Before having children Varsha was an events manager, helping to establish a new arts centre in Birmingham and running the education arm of the Edinburgh Television Festival. | and then there were five ...When Charlie was born the couple became aware of the range early learning videos that were on the market: We would visit friends and see the educational videos that they were showing their own children, remarks Varsha. We couldnt believe how poorly put together many of them were - even those made by reputable companies. Often the children werent very interested in what was happening on the screen and as a parent I doubted the educational merit of their content.
Richard decided that the couple should try to create something better for their own children to watch. As an animator who has worked on childrens TV programmes such as Tweenies I knew that the production quality of the existing educational videos was sometimes pretty poor, explains Richard. Also, my family background is in the education industry - until his retirement my dad had spent forty years running the largest distributor of educational media in the UK, so I was aware of the qualities that were needed to make a really good educational product.
Richard and his animation colleagues spent three years researching, writing, designing and animating the first bee bright DVDs. When they were finally ready Richard was so pleased with the results that he decided to give up his share of the animation company and run bee bright along with Varsha. I could see how much children loved watching bee bright and our own children were absolutely crazy about it, says Richard. It was also great seeing how the DVDs encouraged other children to participate and learn.
Richard and Varsha have now moved away from London and live in the small Wiltshire town of Corsham, where they divide their time between raising their own children and finding and designing new products for the bee bright range. |
